The dogs are often fostered all over the UK (particularly the Many Tears and Heathlands dogs), so please always phone the rescue centre to enquire if the dog you like is in foster somewhere near you.
Always check the rescues website for full details on adoption procedures and current adoption fees

Every Rescue makes policies and adoption conditions that are for the sole protection of the DOG and not to the potential adopter. Their policies are there to try to ensure their dogs go to the right home. Dogs needing homes have been let down by previous owners and so it is up to the rescue to try to make sure that doesn't happen again. Please be prepared to be:
.. asked to visit the dog you like possibly several times before taking the dog home
.. asked extensive questions about the life style you can offer a dog
.. undergo a home check
.. asked for references from vet or training classes
.. happy to take the dog to training classes after adoption (please only use positive reinforcement trainers and do not choose 'balanced' or 'pack leader' type classes)
> Most centres have extremely limited help to keep up to date with enquiries, they do not usually have a person just manning the phone/emails and may often miss replies, usually people who answer the phones also have to collect, transport, groom, feed, exercise, clean dogs, clean kennels, retrain if they have the time/knowledge and medically treat dogs in their care and so please be understanding if you do not receive a reply quickly or even at all - the dog care comes before the enquiries. Always try to repeat phone until you get to speak to someone for updates.
> Some rescues have very strict policies on the type of home they will pass a dog to and often people are offended by rescue choices - they make hard decisions for their believed good of the dog. Policies such as any other dogs in the house must be neutered seems to offend people - but when you work in rescue the reason for this is just so obvious .. if you have an entire dog it is capable of breeding (on purpose or accidental) and that is exactly how dogs end up in rescue - SOMEONE BRED THEM and didn't take them back when things went wrong in the home they sold the dog to!.
> Some rescues do not rehome collies with young children. This again can sometimes be frustrating for a potential adopter .. but often collies are handed into rescue because they may have nipped or herded children in the past. Young children are often treated like 'sheep' by collies who can become over excited and this can cause problems. Ensure you read each rescues policies on rehoming before applying for a dog.
> Some rescues to do not rehome collies to people who work very long hours every day. Often collies have been in homes where they are under exercised and lack activities to keep their minds working. This can result is frustration in the collie which can in turn cause anxieties and destructive behaviour if left alone for long periods of time.
> And then there is the adoption fee that alot of people complain about.
Some centres on here charge around £80-£100 some are more like £180-£200, please stop to think about the costs involved.
Most dogs are neutered in the price (if old/well enough), they have been transported, bathed, groomed, wormed, flead, and fed.
Some also need veterinary treatment before homing, and some have a veterinary check up before homing.
There are also electricity costs, cleaning costs, telephone bills and water bills to pay for during the care of these dogs until they are homed.
So please think again before criticising animal rescue centres, its long and very hard work, often dealing with upsetting cruelty cases, with little reward other than to see a dog happily rehomed.
